Israel knows Damascus’ response to its strikes is ‘definite’, says top Syrian diplomat

Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Mekdad has strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes against various parts of his war-torn country, saying that the Tel Aviv regime is well aware of the fact that Damascus will definitely give a befitting response to its recurrent acts of aggression.

“The Zionist regime is known to have committed countless crimes. The challenges and dilemmas that Syria is caught in right now are inseparable from the ongoing developments and tensions across the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories,” Mekdad told Algeria’s AL24 News television news network on Sunday as he was on an official visit to Algiers.

He reaffirmed Syria’s unwavering support for Palestinians in the face of Israeli crimes and acts of aggression against their land and sacred sites, the most heinous of which is desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Old City of al-Quds.

“The Zionist regime knows very well that Syria will undoubtedly and openly respond to its atrocities. We will give a response to hostile Israeli actions when the time is ripe,” the top Syrian diplomat pointed out.

Back on April 9, SANA reported that the country’s air defenses had thwarted another Israeli act of aggression against the war-ravaged Arab country, and shot down a number of “hostile” missiles in the skies over the southern sector of the nation.

The media outlet, citing a military source, reported that the Israeli military fired several missiles from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights at areas in southern Syria, but most of the projectiles were intercepted and destroyed before hitting any of their targets.

It added that the missiles caused some material damage in the targeted areas.

Known as one of the main supporters of terrorist groups that have battled the government of President Bashar al-Assad since foreign-backed militancy erupted in Syria in early 2011, the Israeli regime frequently violates Syrian sovereignty and conducts attacks in the Arab country.

The targets usually include residential buildings. Military positions especially those of the Hezbollah resistance movement, which has played a key role in helping the Syrian army in its fight against foreign-backed terrorists, are also frequently hit by Israeli strikes.

Israel largely remains silent about the attacks. Damascus has repeatedly complained to the UN over Israeli assaults, urging the Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s crimes. The calls have, however, fallen on deaf ears.
