Iran Calls for Strong UN Measures to Halt Gaza Genocide and Hold Perpetrators Accountable
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, has called for the United Nations to take immediate action to halt what he described as the ongoing genocide by the Israeli regime in the Gaza Strip.

Baghaei shared a message on X on Monday upon his arrival in New York as a member of the Iranian delegation attending the 80th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Baghaei described the situation in Gaza as the UN’s most significant challenge to its institutional integrity and normative credibility to date.
The Iranian spokesperson emphasized the need for the United Nations to maintain its relevance by urging member states to act swiftly and decisively to halt the atrocity and hold those accountable for their actions.
He indicated that the theme for this year’s session, “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” signifies a pivotal milestone for the Assembly during a time of significant danger.
Baghaei expressed concerns that the core objectives and principles of the United Nations are under severe threat from aggressive unilateral actions, coercive measures, disregard for international law, and widespread impunity for serious human rights and humanitarian law violations.
On October 7, 2023, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza following a significant offensive by the Palestinian group Hamas, named Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. This escalation was a response to what Hamas described as heightened aggressions by Israeli forces against Palestinians.
In August, the Israeli government sanctioned a controversial and widely condemned initiative to seize control of Gaza City, disregarding international opposition and criticism regarding the potential implications for the humanitarian situation in the region.
Israel has yet to accomplish its stated military goals of dismantling Hamas and securing the release of all hostages in Gaza.
According to the health ministry in Gaza, the regime’s actions have resulted in the deaths of at least 65,300 Palestinians, a majority of whom are reported to be women and children.
The humanitarian aid blockade by Israel has exacerbated a famine crisis in Gaza.
