Iran president due in Damascus on Wednesday for key talks with Syrian counterpart
Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi is slated to pay an official visit to Syria for formal talks with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, and other top officials.
According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, Raeisi will arrive in Damascus on Wednesday, accompanied by a delegation comprising high-ranking Iranian political and economic officials.
During his two-day visit, Iran’s president will discuss further expansion of political relations as well as promotion of economic and trade cooperation between Tehran and Damascus with high-ranking Syrian officials.
Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus Hossein Akbari also announced the forthcoming visit in a Monday tweet, adding that the trip will take place on an official invitation from Assad.
Raeisi’s trip to Damascus will be the first visit by an Iranian president in over a decade.
Meanwhile, Syria’s official SANA news agency also confirmed the visit on Monday, saying the Iranian and Syrian presidents are expected to discuss bilateral relations as well as joint political and economic agreements in addition to regional developments.
The Iranian president’s upcoming visit to Syria has reportedly ruffled some feathers within the ranks of the Israeli regime.
Israeli media have expressed concern about Raeisi’s trip, saying the visit is “exceptional” and that Israeli authorities should be concerned.
“[President] Ebrahim Raeisi’s trip is his first to Damascus after 2011, during which he will also have field visits outside the protocols,” Israel’s Channel 13 television network said.
