Syria’s Deir Ezzor project targets removal of 8 million cubic meters of rubble

Deir Ezzor Governorate in eastern Syria is pressing ahead with a project to remove and recycle 8 million cubic meters of rubble from the city, turning debris into construction materials that can be reused in reconstruction.

The Fajr al-Furat project targets 8 million cubic meters out of an estimated 10 million cubic meters of rubble across the city, Yahya al-Ali, a member of the governorate’s Executive Office, told SANA on Sunday.

The rubble is being recycled by Zoom Investment Holding Group under the supervision of the Deir Ezzor City Council, al-Ali said.

Work began in the al-Rashdiyeh neighborhood, with the project targeting a removal capacity of 15,000 cubic meters per day over an 18-month period.

Between 1,800 and 3,000 cubic meters are currently being removed each day during the pilot phase, while operations are proceeding simultaneously in the Old Airport neighborhood, al-Ali said.

Project Executive Director Rashed al-Saeed said operations include demolishing destroyed buildings and structures deemed at risk of collapse, whether government- or privately owned, after they are inspected by a safety committee.

The rubble is then transported to designated sites and processed through on-site crushers, where materials are sorted for reuse.

Hussein al-Mousa, chairman of Zoom Investment Holding Group, said the recycling process produces raw materials for reconstruction, including construction aggregates of different sizes.

Deir Ezzor Governorate launched the Fajr al-Furat project on Sept. 10 in cooperation with the City Council and Zoom Investment Holding Group to remove and recycle rubble left by years of war across the city.
