IRGC Commander Warns of Strategic Surprises as Military Adopts Offensive Stance

A high-ranking official within the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has issued a warning that, although Iran's military activities have been purely defensive since hostilities began, the armed forces are fully equipped and ready to shift to an offensive strategy if required. The commander advised adversaries to anticipate "strategic surprises."

Brigadier General Yadollah Javani, serving as the Political Deputy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), conveyed his statements in a televised interview broadcasted on Monday night.

He underscored that the adversary instigated the conflict, highlighting that Iran’s actions up to this point have been solely defensive.

He cautioned that the current defensive posture is set to undergo a transformation, signaling a significant and transformative change in the military’s strategic doctrine.

General Javani asserted that adversaries should be aware of their inability to take them by surprise. Rather, it is the opposition that should remain vigilant for unexpected strategic maneuvers.

He drew attention to the recent appointment decrees affecting senior IRGC leaders, notably emphasizing the directive issued to the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief, Major General Ahmad Vahidi.

General Javani emphasized that the newly issued command decrees represent more than just administrative adjustments. They serve as a definitive indication to adversaries that Iran’s military strategy is advancing to not only confront but surpass the demands of contemporary warfare.

General Javani has highlighted that General Vahidi’s directive focuses on achieving “maximum deterrence,” introducing a novel operational strategy. This strategy transforms all defensive measures by the armed forces into inherently offensive actions, with the aim of proactively neutralizing potential threats.

The statement emphasized that the Islamic Republic, under the guidance of the late Imam Khomeini, the late leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and its current leaders, has never initiated aggression. The general censured the opponent for its significant “miscalculations.”

General Javani affirmed that all measures required to protect the nation, uphold security, and counteract adversarial risks will be implemented as needed. He highlighted that the armed forces have consistently shown their determination in recent incidents and pledged that this commitment will persist.

Major General Ahmad Vahidi’s recent ascension to the role of Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC signifies a critical move in the consolidation of Iran’s military and strategic leadership.

General Vahidi, a seasoned veteran of the sacred defense during the Iraq-Iran conflict in the 1980s and a highly regarded figure within the security apparatus of the Islamic Republic, brings a wealth of experience to his current position.

He has held the positions of Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics and Minister of Interior, providing him with a distinctive insight into both asymmetric warfare and the mechanisms of domestic security.

His appointment to the senior position within the IRGC indicates a clear move towards a defense strategy that is more cohesive, forward-thinking, and resilient.
