Iran’s FM says current situation in Strait of Hormuz direct result of US violations

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the prevailing conditions in the Strait of Hormuz are a direct consequence of US violations of international law.
Araghchi held a phone conversation with his Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, on Wednesday morning.
The two diplomats exchanged views on the security, legal, and economic consequences of the joint US-Israeli military aggression against Iran.
During the conversation, Araghchi reiterated that the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz stems directly from US “lawlessness and its illegal military strikes against a sovereign UN member.”
Araghchi told Tajani that the responsibility for the repercussions of this situation on the global economy lies with the aggressors.
“Iran, as a coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz, has implemented measures under international law to safeguard its security,” he added.
The Iranian diplomat further condemned the silence of certain European states over US-Israeli military aggression against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.
He said that such double standards are increasingly weakening international law and undermining the non-proliferation regime.
For his part, the Italian foreign minister called for the return of peace and stability in the Persian Gulf, expressing Italy’s willingness to contribute to strengthening security throughout the West Asian region.
Days after the US and Israel launched their military aggression against Iran on February 28, Tehran restricted the Strait of Hormuz to adversaries and their allies as a strategic maneuver.
The biggest-ever disruption at the Persian Gulf waterway, which is a major transit point for about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, has fueled inflation and slowed the global economy, with an impact expected to last for months.
On April 13, the US imposed an illegal blockade on Iranian ports. Consequently, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced that the narrow waterway will remain closed due to the US violation of the ceasefire conditions.
Iran’s Army also warned that if Iran’s ports in the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea are threatened, no port in the Persian Gulf or the Arabian Sea will be safe.
