Iranian Foreign Minister Reports ‘Good Progress’ in Latest Round of Indirect Talks with US, Sees Clear Path Forward

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the recent negotiations on lifting sanctions with the United States have ended with an agreement on a series of guiding principles. These principles are expected to direct forthcoming discussions towards a possible agreement.

In a conversation with an IRIB reporter in Geneva on Tuesday, shortly after the conclusion of talks, Araghchi characterized the discussions as “serious” and more constructive compared to the previous round, noting that various proposals were put forward and thoroughly scrutinized.

“We have successfully reached an agreement on a foundational set of guiding principles, which will serve as the basis for advancing discussions on the text of a prospective deal,” he stated.

An official warned that the journey towards a final agreement will not be swift, highlighting the intricacies involved in refining the text. Despite the complexities, the official underscored the “significant strides” achieved, pointing to a more defined and optimistic trajectory ahead.

In response to inquiries about the next round of negotiations, Araghchi confirmed that a date has not yet been established. He noted that the parties involved have consented to collaborate on drafting potential agreement texts and will exchange these drafts prior to setting a date for the subsequent talks.

The minister announced that despite the absence of a formal roadmap, both parties now possess a clearer understanding of the situation, although there are still differences that will require time to resolve.

The most recent session of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States spanned about three hours and was conducted at the residence of the Omani ambassador.
