The Syrian Army troops successfully maintained their positions in eastern Homs against a surprise attack launched by the self-proclaimed Islamic State.

According to a military source, the government forces repelled ISIS offensive on Tafha hills in the eastern countryside of Homs, killing at least 5 jihadists, destroying two 32mm gun-mounted vehicles and seizing weapons and ammunition.

Meanwhile, the government troops, backed by allied forces, resume its large-scale offensive aiming at reaching the embattled eastern city of Deir Ezzor. Today, the troops were capable of expelling the Islamic State from new hills located to northeast of the ancient city of Palmyra, thus inching closer to the oil-rich Arak town.

According to reports, the terror group is dispatching more militants to its stronghold of al-Sukhnah which serves as the last defense line for Deir Ezzor.
