US Airstrike on Yemeni Capital Kills at Least 12 Civilians, Dozens Injured

A US airstrike on a crowded market in Yemen’s capital Sana’a killed at least 12 civilians and wounded over 30 others on Monday, as Washington continued its military campaign across the war-torn country.

The strike hit the al-Farwa neighborhood in the Sha’ub district early Monday morning, according to Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health and Population.

Rescue operations were underway, and authorities warned the death toll could rise, with several victims still trapped under rubble.

“Initial figures show 12 killed and more than 30 wounded,” the health ministry said in a statement carried by al-Masirah television.

“Many of the injured are in critical condition,” it added.

Other areas of the capital, including Attan and the al-Wahda district, were also hit in a wave of violent US air raids.

On Sunday night and into early Monday, US warplanes struck various residential neighborhoods in Sana’a, marking one of the deadliest nights since the aerial campaign began.

Al-Masirah reported that 21 strikes targeted Sana’a and its outskirts overnight, hitting the western, eastern, and southern edges of the city.

The air raids extended beyond the capital.

US strikes also hit the Sa’ada governorate in Yemen’s far north, the central Ma’rib region, and Hudaydah on the western coast, state-run media reported.

In a separate incident on Sunday, at least three civilians were killed during attacks on Sana’a.

The US military has intensified its air campaign in Yemen over the past month.

Washington says the strikes aim to deter the Ansarullah movement from targeting ships linked to Israel in the Red Sea.

But Yemen’s armed forces have vowed to continue their operations.

“Our attacks on Israeli-bound vessels will not stop until the aggression on Gaza ends,” a spokesperson for the Yemeni military said.

Since March, more than 200 people have been killed in US strikes across Yemen, according to official tallies.

The Yemeni Armed Forces have launched retaliatory attacks on Israeli, American, and British interests in the Red Sea and surrounding waters.

These actions began in late 2023 in response to Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza and Western involvement in the region.

As part of its strategy, Yemen enforced a blockade on key maritime routes to disrupt the flow of military supplies and pressure international actors to address the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
