A military source told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that an army unit foiled militant groups’ attempt to infiltrate into the safe areas in al-Ashrafiyeh in Aleppo city, killing and injuring a number of militants.
Syrian military forces have captured areas near the border with Lebanon, cutting supply lines for foreign-backed insurgents as the army tightens its grip northwest of the capital.
Syrian troops are approaching the mountain resort of al-Zabadani, which has been under militant control for two years, cutting it off from militant-held areas in the mountainous Qalamoun region, state TV said on Friday.
Syrian forces have systematically captured most of the militant-held towns along the mountainous frontier since launching an offensive in the region in November.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies – especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey – are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
