Israel’s key oil refinery ‘existential threat’ to Haifa after Iranian strike: Mayor

The mayor of Haifa says Israel’s key oil refinery, Bazan, poses “a serious and existential threat” to the city after it was crippled by an Iranian retaliatory missile strike in mid-June.

Yona Yahav demanded the permanent evacuation and relocation of the facility since the threat “is clear and undeniable,” according to Hebrew-language daily Maariv.

The mayor said Tel Aviv “must act immediately to evacuate and relocate this company” from the city.

The Bazan Group’s oil refinery in the Haifa Bay came under attack by Iranian ballistic missiles on June 15.

The strike came as part of the Islamic Republic’s retaliatory operation—True Promise III—which began on June 13, in response to the Israeli regime’s brazen aggression against the country.

The strike forced the facility’s shutdown and severely disrupted the regime’s fuel supply chains.

Haifa’s mayor said that the key refinery “would never return to operation.” He promised to “do everything to remove it from the city.”

Avihu Han, head of Haifa’s Environmental Association, also demanded an immediate halt to the regime’s reconstruction efforts at the damaged facility.

He said, “There is no longer any room for this company in the heart of Haifa.”

The complex is responsible for a significant part of the fuel demand in the occupied territories. It has a refining capacity of nearly 0.2 million barrels per day.
