Internal security investigates Ayn al-Arab prison fire
The Internal Security Directorate in Aleppo confirmed the launch of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire at Ayn al-Arab Prison in Aleppo countryside, which resulted in the death of seven inmates. The probe aims to determine responsibility and take the necessary legal measures against those found involved.
In a clarifying statement released Saturday via its Telegram channel, the Directorate said that following Friday’s unrest in the city, several individuals created disorder inside the prison and set fire to dormitories, causing the blaze to spread. The incident led to the death of seven prisoners and injuries to dozens from smoke inhalation and burns.
The statement noted that Ayn al-Arab Prison has not yet been formally transferred to government authorities, with the handover process still subject to judicial procedures. The Directorate stressed that the prison file remains under review by the competent judiciary, pending the issuance of the required decisions and memoranda to complete the handover within the integration plan.
The Directorate affirmed that relevant authorities are closely following the incident and will announce the investigation results once completed. It also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Earlier Saturday, a security source reported the death of seven inmates and multiple injuries after a fire broke out during unrest inside the prison on Friday.
