Palestinian Former Detainee Calls ‘israeli’ Prisons “Graveyards for the Living”

After nearly two years in detention, Palestinian journalist and former detainee Ramez Awwad said prisoners in Israeli jails are enduring dire conditions, describing the facilities as “graveyards for the living.”

Awwad, a resident of Jifna in the Ramallah area, described his detention as a “grueling and agonizing experience” marked by a lack of basic human dignity. He said he felt like “a newborn” after his release on Aug. 27.

According to a report by Al Jazeera Media Network, Awad described the severe daily hardships faced by prisoners, saying detainees endure persistent fear and terror during their incarceration, as well as hunger caused by the poor quality of food provided.

Awwad said hygiene conditions in Israeli prisons were severely inadequate, forcing inmates to endure unhealthy surroundings that intensified their suffering and threatened their health.

He also described systemic medical neglect in Israeli prisons, saying ill prisoners live in constant fear while being denied medical treatment.
