ASHURA’26: Millions Commemorate Ashura Mourning Imam Hussein’s (as) Martyrdom

Millions of mourners, dressed in black, commemorated Ashura, honoring the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam and grandson of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon Him). His sacrifice in the Karbala desert stands as a lasting emblem of resistance against tyranny.

This year, Ashura, marking the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Muharram, was observed on Thursday in Iran.

A vast assembly of mourners engaged in somber rituals, rhythmically beating their chests, listening to poignant elegies, and shedding tears in remembrance of a cataclysmic event that transpired in 680 AD. On that day, Imam Hussein and his 72 steadfast companions were martyred in the historic Battle of Karbala in southern Iraq, following a valiant struggle for justice against the overwhelming forces of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.

In Iran, cities and villages witnessed widespread mourning processions as residents gathered to commemorate the revered figure. Benefactors distributed “nazri,” a customary votive food, to both mourners and those in need, symbolizing the spirit of generosity and unity championed by Imam Hussein (AS).

The nation resonated with the rhythmic drumbeats and solemn elegies as millions gathered to honor Imam Hussein (AS).

For the millions commemorating Imam Hussein (AS), this Ashura holds an additional weight of sorrow as it marks the first Muharram since the martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, who was killed in an unprovoked conflict initiated by the US and Israel on February 28. During more than 40 days of illegal assaults, the nation mourned the loss of its esteemed leader, along with several senior commanders and thousands of civilians.

The commemorative ceremonies held during the initial ten days of Muharram reach their peak on the day of Ashura.

On the eve of Tasu’a, commemorating the day before Ashura, mourners honor Abbas ibn Ali (PBUH), the half-brother of Imam Hussein, who was martyred attempting to provide water to the women and children in Imam Hussein’s camp. They had been deprived of water for days due to a blockade by opposing forces.

Shia Muslims worldwide engage in mourning rituals, with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims journeying from Iran and various other countries to the holy city of Karbala in Iraq. This pilgrimage marks Ashura at the revered shrine of Imam Hussein.

The Muharram ceremonies symbolize more than just rituals; they embody the enduring conflict between truth and falsehood, representing humanity’s perpetual fight against oppression and tyranny—a cause championed by Imam Hussein (AS) through his ultimate sacrifice.
