Baghaei Asserts Iran Approaches Geneva Talks with an ‘Open Mind and Open Eyes’
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, has conveyed to Press TV that Tehran is entering indirect talks with the United States in Oman with both "an open mind and open eyes." He emphasized that the easing of sanctions is a crucial component of any potential nuclear deal.

In a statement prior to Tuesday’s discussions, Baghaei announced that the negotiating process is effectively underway, as the Iranian delegation prepares to depart for the venue shortly.
In his address, he emphasized the commitment to good intentions and a serious approach, highlighting the result-oriented nature of their efforts. He underscored the crucial importance of time for their endeavors.
Baghaei expressed Iran’s anticipation that the United States will exhibit a comparable degree of seriousness and good intentions as the negotiations advance.
The Iranian delegation engaged in talks with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi the previous day, during which Tehran expressed its perspectives, concerns, and demands.
The delegation held consultations with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to discuss the technical aspects of the nuclear issue.
Baghaei noted that Iran’s delegation consists of both technical experts and specialists focused on the removal of sanctions, emphasizing that lifting these sanctions is an integral component of any prospective agreement.
He noted that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has shown willingness to stay in Oman “for days or even weeks” if required to conclude an agreement, underscoring Tehran’s seriousness, focus on achieving results, and awareness of the significance of time.
Delegations from Iran and the United States, spearheaded by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, have recommenced discussions concerning nuclear matters in Muscat on February 6. This comes several months following Israel’s actions in June 2025. The talks remain indirect, with the Omani foreign minister facilitating communication by moving between the delegations.
The second phase of indirect discussions between Iran and the United States is currently underway in Geneva, mediated by Oman’s foreign minister at the Omani mission. These negotiations see representatives Witkoff and Araghchi reconvening after both parties characterized their initial round of talks in Muscat as constructive, albeit introductory.
Negotiations are set to occur as Trump has moved to deploy military forces in the area, escalating apprehensions about potential new military engagements. On February 12, U.S. officials announced that the Pentagon is dispatching an extra aircraft carrier to the region, which will be accompanied by thousands more troops, fighter jets, and guided-missile destroyers.
