Syria’s Atomic Energy Commission inspects Arak gas plant for radiation safety
Experts from Syria’s Atomic Energy Commission (SAEC), working with officials from the Syrian Gas Company, carried out a field inspection on Monday at the Arak gas plant east of Homs, central Syria, to assess environmental safety and radiation levels, the company said.
The inspection covered facilities linked to the al-Hail gas field, east of Homs, and focused on evaluating potential radiation exposure associated with oil and gas operations, according to Hani al-Naddaf, head of external relations and media at the Syrian Petroleum Company.
Al-Naddaf said the visit was part of broader efforts to strengthen safety standards and protect workers and the environment. He added that the assessment builds on ongoing cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission, whose recommendations guide operational safety measures in the sector.
Radiation protection specialists noted that naturally occurring radioactive materials can accumulate on equipment during oil and gas extraction, highlighting the need for proper monitoring and handling procedures.
The inspection included radiation surveys, the collection of samples for laboratory analysis and plans to hold a training workshop aimed at raising staff awareness, he said.
The initiative is part of a national program to monitor and evaluate natural radiation linked to Syria’s oil and gas industry. Further surveys are planned at other gas facilities, including Sharifa, the South Central Gas Plant, Abu Rabah, Sadad, Qamqam and North Faydh.
