US Treasury Secretary Admits Sanctions Aim to Disrupt Iran’s Economy and Stir Unrest
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has publicly recognized the impact of American sanctions in destabilizing Iran's economy and contributing to public unrest.

In an interview with Fox News at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, Bessent characterized the sanctions as a form of “economic statecraft,” suggesting they had played a role in inciting recent riots in Iran.
According to Bessent, the strategy proved effective as December witnessed an economic collapse, with a significant bank failure marking the downturn. The central bank commenced printing money amidst a looming dollar shortage. Consequently, the inability to secure imports sparked public demonstrations.
He described the situation as a form of economic statecraft, highlighting that no aggressive actions have been taken and noting the encouraging progress being made.
His comments follow a shift in the nature of demonstrations in Iran, where peaceful protests against economic difficulties escalated into violence. This transition occurred subsequent to statements made by officials from the United States and the Israeli government, which appeared to incite acts of vandalism and chaos.
The riots ensued after incendiary statements by Trump, who issued threats of new military action against Iran, citing the Islamic Republic’s possible clashing with the protesters.
Intelligence officials have confirmed that elements supported by the United States and Israel were attempting to commandeer the protests and instigate disorder as a strategy to facilitate aggression.
The United States has imposed a prolonged series of economic sanctions on Iran for several decades, focusing on critical industries such as banking, energy, and trade. Iranian officials have consistently claimed that these sanctions have exacerbated inflation, led to supply shortages, and placed considerable pressure on everyday citizens, all while aiming to sway the country’s domestic political landscape.
Despite facing various pressures, Iran’s government has reiterated its dedication to upholding social stability, safeguarding its citizens, and engaging in lawful international trade.
Officials have voiced criticism regarding efforts by the United States to frame domestic economic challenges as justification for external interference.
