Minnesota prosecutors resign over DOJ handling of Renee Good case

At least six federal prosecutors from the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office have resigned over concerns regarding the United States Department of Justice’s handling of the investigation into the killing of Renee Good.

The resignations, first reported by The New York Times and confirmed by Minnesota’s KARE 11, also stem from DOJ efforts to pursue a criminal case against Good’s widow and the department’s reluctance to investigate the ICE agent who fatally shot Good.

Among those who stepped down is Joe Thompson, a high-profile figure known for leading the Feeding Our Future fraud case. Thompson served as second-in-command in the Minnesota US Attorney’s Office prior to his resignation on Tuesday. He was also recognized as the public face of federal efforts to hold fraud suspects accountable.

Last year, US President Donald Trump appointed Thompson as Minnesota’s Acting US Attorney, a position he held until Dan Rosen assumed the role. In a June press release, the Department of Justice noted that Thompson had “overseen an unprecedented effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to prosecute fraud against state and federal government programs, including as the lead prosecutor in the Feeding Our Future investigation, which has been recognized by the Department of Justice as the largest Covid-19 fraud in the United States.
