On Sunday morning, Israeli authorities unilaterally closed the Karama Crossing, the sole passenger route linking the occupied West Bank and Jordan. This sudden closure has resulted in the suspension of all travel, both for those departing and arriving.
The Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and Borders reported that the closure occurred unexpectedly and without prior coordination, causing significant disruption to the travel plans of thousands of Palestinians.
Earlier in the day, the general authority stated that the crossing would function as usual. Nonetheless, following the announcement, the Israeli authorities abruptly shut down the terminal without providing any justification for the unexpected move.
The Karama Crossing, also referred to as the King Hussein Bridge, functions as the primary international exit point for most Palestinians residing in the West Bank, given their restrictions from using Israeli airports. This crossing acts as a crucial conduit for facilitating travel, commerce, medical care, and educational pursuits abroad.
In recent years, the occupation authorities have frequently implemented closures at the crossing, leading to substantial delays, especially for individuals with pressing travel requirements.
The timeline for the reopening of the crossing remains unspecified at this time.
In a fresh assault targeting Israeli forces in the West Bank, two Israeli soldiers were reportedly killed in a combined shooting and stabbing incident near the Allenby Crossing, a key point between the West Bank and Jordan, on Thursday.
Israeli forces have conducted operations in several cities and towns across the West Bank, including Hebron, Nablus, and Tulkarm, resulting in the arrest of additional Palestinian individuals.
