Syrian refugee hailed ‘hero’ for returning €150K he found in Germany

A Syrian refugee in Germany has been hailed as a “hero” after he handed in €150,000 which he found in a cupboard given to him by a charity organization.

“This young man has behaved in an exemplary manner and deserves great credit,” said the police in Minden, Germany in a statement. “People often report small amounts of money found to the police, but such a large sum is absolutely exceptional.”
According to reports, the 25-year-old Muhannad M found the money when he was reassembling the wardrobe which was given to him after being granted asylum in Germany.
“For the police and the town he is the hero of the day,” added the statement.
Muhanned told reporters that the amount would have allowed him to bring his two brothers to Germany, “But Allah would never allow it, to finance your own interests with someone else’s property.”

Investigations are currently underway to find the money’s original owner. In accordance to German law, Muhammad is entitled to three percent of the amount, €4,500, as the finder’s fee.
Europe is grappling with its biggest influx of asylum seekers since World War II, as people flee conflict-ridden zones in Africa and the Middle East.
Many blame major European powers for the unprecedented exodus, saying their policies have led to a surge in terrorism and war in the violence-hit regions, forcing more people out of their homes.
More than 214,860 asylum seekers have reached Europe via the Mediterranean so far this year, while 2,860 people died or went missing in their perilous journey to the continent, according to the latest figures by the International Organization of Migration.
