ISIS will not get its hands on the Al-Mahr oil field any time soon after Syrian government troops advanced considerably in the desert terrain of eastern Homs earlier today.

Starting on Saturday evening, the National Defence Forces (NDF) began targeting ISIS positions on the outskirts of the Al-Mahr oil field. The government attack continued through the night while the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Russian Air Force provided covering fire for the NDF.

By daybreak on Sunday morning, NDF infantry units had taken full control of four hills surrounding Al-Mahr, known by locals as the Shihab hills.

A military source informing Al-Masdar News on the events did not specify casualties on either side; however, he noted that ISIS forces left behind several machine gun emplacements and ammunitions.
