President Ahmad al-Sharaa welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi his accompanying delegation at Damascus International Airport on Wednesday ahead of talks aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding economic cooperation between Syria and Iraq.
The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to deepen political and economic relations, boost trade and explore investment and development opportunities, with an emphasis on mutual respect and understanding.
Regional developments and their geopolitical implications are also expected to feature in the discussions.
The visit follows remarks by president al-Sharaa in an interview with Iraq’s Dijlah TV, broadcast Tuesday evening, in which he described the current period as a historic opportunity for Syria and Iraq to strengthen cooperation.
The president said both countries have an opportunity to regain greater control over regional decision-making and build strong states capable of protecting their interests while pursuing economic development and prosperity.
