Over 40 Caribbean groups call for arms embargo on Israel over Gaza genocide

More than 40 civil society organizations and prominent individuals from across the Caribbean urge regional leaders to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel.

In an open letter to the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the groups called for decisive action, including a full military embargo, halting arms-linked shipping, and suspending diplomatic, sporting, and cultural ties with the “rogue state” of Israel.

Among the other key demands, the signatories are urging the leaders to ban the use of CARICOM-flagged vessels for transporting arms or dual-use goods, and the suspension of diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv.

They also called on CARICOM leaders to support legal proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC), including South Africa’s genocide case at the UN’s top court

They also urged participation in the upcoming emergency meeting of The Hague Group in Bogotá, Colombia, later this month.

The appeal comes ahead of the 49th CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting, set to take place in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from July 6 to 8.

The Caribbean Movement for Peace and Integration (CMPI) files a groundbreaking case before the Supreme Court of Barbados.

In their letter, the coalition said while many issues are on the summit’s agenda, Israel’s actions demand urgent attention from Caribbean nations committed to justice and humanity.

The letter reflects growing international calls for accountability over Israel’s actions in Gaza and urges governments to align with international legal standards.

Caribbean civil society groups say the region’s history of anti-colonialism and solidarity with oppressed peoples demands nothing less.
