Lebanon Speaker Berri Urges Stability Through ‘israel’ Ceasefire and Withdrawal to International Borders
On Friday, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri engaged in discussions with the United States ambassador and the head of the Military Cooperation office.
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri conveyed to the U.S. ambassador and the head of the Military Coordination Group for Lebanon (MCG4L) on Friday that the cornerstone of regional stability lies in urging ‘Israel’ to halt its military actions in Lebanon and retreat to the internationally recognized borders.
Speaker Berri welcomed Ambassador Michel Issa, MCG4L Head General Joseph Clearfield, along with an accompanying military delegation, at his residence in Ain Al-Tineh.
The meeting centered on the situation in southern Lebanon, examining the organization’s activities in light of initiatives to designate pilot areas and create a verification mechanism for the Israeli withdrawal alongside the Lebanese Army’s deployment.
Lebanon’s speaker has stated that Israel has continued its violations and assaults on Lebanon and the southern region since November 2024, characterizing these actions as “ongoing and systematic.”
He stated that Israeli attacks have resulted in the devastation of villages, the demolition of fields and agricultural lands, the burning of forests, and the targeting of heritage and cultural sites.
Berri emphasized that achieving stability hinges on pressuring Israel to halt its military actions and retreat to the recognized international borders.
Issa characterized the environment of the direct negotiations between the Lebanese authority and Israel as “positive,” noting that discussions would proceed despite no specific date being established for the next round of talks.
In response to inquiries about Washington’s stance on potential military operations in the Ali Taher Heights, Issa remarked to a reporter, “I don’t know; perhaps you know more than I do.”
Lebanese officials are currently assessing the status of proposed pilot areas before expanding discussions to include additional locations, according to Issa. Furthermore, Issa noted that while a list of potential countries is being considered for involvement in the monitoring mechanism, no selection has been finalized.
Issa stated that Clearfield’s trip to Beirut aimed to elucidate recent developments in the region, especially for Speaker Berri, and to provide an overview of the group’s ongoing initiatives.
In a separate development, Berri has given his signature to laws that were passed during the Parliament’s general legislative session.
