Iranian lawmakers at Baku event urge economic sanctions on Israel

An Iranian parliamentary delegation has called for an immediate end to Israel’s bloody campaign of death and destruction in the besieged Gaza Strip and the imposition of economic sanctions on the regime.

On the sidelines of the 14th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Iranian lawmakers – Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi and Abolfazl Amouei – held separate meetings on Saturday with a number of delegations attending the event.

In a meeting with the Palestinian parliamentary delegation, Rahimi Jahanabadi underscored a swift end to the crimes of Israel in Gaza. He also said the parliaments of Arab and Muslim countries should hold consultations on imposing economic sanctions on Israel.

Since early October 2023, Israel has killed nearly 30,000 people, mostly women and children, in Gaza.

Also in Baku, the Iranian and Bangladeshi delegations discussed ways to improve parliamentary and economic relations. They also talked on political issues in the region.

The Iranian and Syrian lawmakers also held talks about the latest developments in Gaza. And they called for enhanced economic cooperation between Tehran and Damascus.

In a meeting with the head of the Qatari delegation, Rahimi Jahanabadi hailed the constructive relations between the two countries and Doha’s stance in support of the Palestinian people.

He said restoration of ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia and efforts to improve relations with Jordan and Egypt would be an opportunity to develop inclusive interaction with the Muslim world.

The top Qatari lawmaker slammed Israel for its campaign in Gaza and said the parliaments of Muslim countries need to reinforce unity against the regime.

The 14th APA plenary session was held in Baku under the theme “Fostering regional cooperation for sustainable development in Asia.” It brought together delegations from about 40 countries as well as parliamentary speakers from nearly 10 nations.
