FM: US Unable to Subjugate Iranians Ever Again

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif blasted the CIA’s role in staging the 1953 coup in Iran, stressing that Washington will never succeed in bringing another dictator to rule the country.

“65 years ago today, the US overthrew the popularly elected democratic government of Dr. Mossadegh, restoring the dictatorship and subjugating Iranians for the next 25 years,” Zarif wrote on his twitter page on Sunday on the anniversary of the 1953 coup in Iran.

He referred to the US state department’s formation of an “Action Group” which dreams of doing the same through pressure, misinformation and demagoguery against Iran, and said, “Never again.”

The 1953 coup d’état (known in Iran as the 28 Mordad coup) was the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Iran, and its head of government Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq on August 19, 1953, orchestrated by the United Kingdom (under the name ‘Operation Boot’) and the United States (under the name Pejak Project).

The coup saw the formation of a military government under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who progressed from a constitutional monarch to an authoritarian one who relied heavily on United States’ support to hold on to power until his own overthrow in February 1979.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the creation of a new Iran Action Group to coordinate US policy toward the Islamic Republic in the wake of the US withdrawal from the nuclear accord with Iran.

Brian Hook, whom Pompeo named head of the Iran Action Group, dismissed speculation that the new group’s creation during a week coinciding with the coup anniversary suggested that the United States was pursuing regime change in Iran, calling the timing “pure coincidence”.
