Security Council didn’t move despite terrorists’ attempts to transport Sarin gas from Turkey into Syria

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari, said on Tuesday there are still gaps in applying resolution No. 1540 which help deliver weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to terrorists.

UN Security Council (UNSC) has adopted resolution No.1540 on the prevention of delivering nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons (WMD) to terrorists.

Al-Jaafari added at a UN Security Council session on resolution No.1540 that the council didn’t move in spite of the facts that unveiled the terrorists’ attempts to transport Sarin gas from Turkey into Syria.

“The dangerous violations of resolution 1540 are clear as a reality where Syria witnesses the using of chemical weapons by terrorist organizations many times against civilians and army personnel through a support by regional and Arab states,” al-Jaafari said.

He added that terrorist groups in Housh al-Fara, threw a bomb, on June 13th, 2016, that contains chemical materials on a number of the Syrian army soldiers, and other terrorists targeted al-Awameed region in old Aleppo with shells containing poisonous materials that killed 6 civilians on August 2nd.

Al-Jaafari said that the terrorist groups have supplied 450 artillery shells, equipped with mustard gas, and sent them to Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria.

He added that Syria affirms its commitment to the international resolutions and conventions on cooperation and exchange of data, adding that Syria calls on UNSC to assume its duties and guarantee that terrorists don’t possess WMD.

Al-Jaafari stressed that Syria reiterates its commitment to the international communiqués and enforced procedures for cooperation, coordination and exchange of information to face the threat of weapons of mass destruction falling in the hands of the terrorists.

The Syrian government, al-Jaafari clarified, has constantly enhanced the relevant required measures and submitted to the committee of the resolution No.1540 (the 1540 Committee) five national reports on the implementation of the resolution.

He renewed the Syrian government’s call on the Security Council and its sub-committee to follow up on the tasks entrusted to them to insure that the terrorist groups operating in Syrian do not have access to weapons of mass destruction and to hold accountable the countries which are supporting terrorism, as this would effectively contribute to the efforts aimed at preserving international peace and security.

Al-Jaafari pointed out that the terrorist groups affiliated to ISIS have rigged approximately 450 artillery shells equipped with the chlorine and mustard gases in the Iraqi city of Mosul and in the Syrian Raqqa province under the supervision of the ISIS terrorist Abdul Rahman al-Nawi, adding that a number of those shells were transported to Deir Ezzor province.

Syria’s UN representative highlighted that the Syrian government has sent to the UN secretary General, the successive heads of the Security Council and the 1540 Committee scores of letters containing detailed and documented information proving that some terrorism-supporting countries, mainly the Turkish and Saudi regimes, have facilitated and helped terrorist organizations get hold of chemical weapons and materials.1-47
