Ranking diplomats from Iran and Iraq attended the first session of a joint political committee in Tehran with the aim of cementing mutual cooperation in a broad range of fields.

In the gathering on Monday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Nazar Khairallah discussed the latest developments regarding bilateral, regional and international issues.

The Iranian diplomat said the meeting is aimed at finding ways to institutionalize mutual cooperation, helping the implementation of bilateral economic and trade agreements, and promoting cooperation in issues pertaining to borders, environmental protection and consular affairs.

Amir Abdollahian highlighted the need for the enhancement of relations and for efforts to remove trade barriers, strengthen the presence of Iranian businesses in Iraq, and facilitate travels between the two Muslim neighbors.

He further congratulated Iraq on its recent victories in the battle against terrorist groups, and reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to supporting Baghdad in this battle.

The Iraqi deputy minister, for his part, expressed gratitude to Iran for its unwavering supports for the Arab country, particularly in the fight against terrorism.

Highlighting the significant impact of Iran-Iraq relations on the establishment of security and stability in the region, Khairallah called for continuation of political consultations between Tehran and Baghdad.

Iran, a close ally of Iraq, has been supporting the Arab nation in the fight against Daesh (ISIL) since the terrorist group invaded Iraq in summer 2014.
