Hamas Movement’s representative in Lebanon, Ali Baraka, congratulated the Lebanese people on the election of Michel Aoun as a new president for the country.
Baraka expressed his group’s hope that Aoun’s election would contribute to reinforcing stability and development in Lebanon.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining good relationship between the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, calling for more support to the Palestinian cause in all Arab and international forums.
Baraka called on the newly elected Lebanese president to work on alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian refugees who live in squalid camps in Lebanon.
The Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon are considered the worst of the region’s refugee camps in terms of poverty, health, education and living conditions.
Lebanese lawmakers earlier Monday elected the 81-year-old ex-army chief Michel Aoun as a new president for the country, ending a 29-month presidential vacuum.
