Late last night, Islamic State insurgents spearheaded an attack on the Al-Azib valley near the Ithriya-Khanasser road in a bid to cutoff the only highway connecting Aleppo with the government mainland of central Syria.

According to Al-Masdar News field correspondent Ibrahim Joudeh, clashes erupted at 2 a.m. and continued until 6 a.m when ISIS finally called of its attack which was focused around the Al-Majbal checkpoint.

For ISIS commanders, their offensive ultimately looked to relieve pressure on the Maskanah Plains where the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) recently liberated the highly fortified Jirah Airbase in a renewed push towards Raqqa.

Following the jihadist attack, ISIS sustained 15 casualties some of which were retrieved by the SAA. On the other hand, 2 SAA soldiers were killed-in-action while two more were wounded.
